Depression is not a shade of blue

Larkspurs sing

as deep indigo pales into

chambray skies.

Her gingham skirt

already dusty

hidden beneath a crisp apron

holds the embryos of

prairie chickens.

No time for picking

pale delphiniums

or water hyacinths.

Sapphire skies

mirror

tired eyes.
